Never did I imagine I would enjoy traveling alone. I've always preferred having a companion. However, my semi-solo trip to Bali was incredibly fulfilling. I've tried it once, and I'm definitely doing it again.
1.Solo Traveling Gives You A Sense Of Liberation
Solo traveling offers a sense of liberation. You have the freedom to be spontaneous, deciding where to go, what to eat, and where to stay. For my trip to Bali, I opted for accommodations in a serene rice field. If I had been traveling with friends or family, I might have chosen differently for logistical and safety reasons. Solo travel allowed me to embrace a travel style that truly suited me.

2. You Learn to Become a Good Planner
Because I was afraid of being alone and uncertain about what to do or where to go while traveling, I started planning ahead. I organized everything from the places I wanted to visit to the modes of transport I would use. This made the trip much easier and more enjoyable.
3. You Learn To Become More Confident
From worrying, "Oh no, what am I going to do when I get there?" to realizing, "Wow, I'm actually doing it, and it isn’t as hard as I thought—it’s simply amazing." The moment you realize, "Oh wow, I never even knew I could do that," makes you understand that you are more capable than you think you are.

4. You Learn To Take Good Care Of Yourself
Since safety is a primary concern when traveling solo, you will become more vigilant and learn to take good care of yourself. For example, you will research safety tips online, take good care of your health to avoid falling sick during your travels, and be cautious about making friends with strangers to ensure your personal safety. You will also become more aware of your surroundings. Through these experiences, you will become wiser and improve your decision-making skills.
5. A Chance To Get Closer To God
I once heard the sermons regarding the importance to break away from the busyness every once in a while to practice silence and solitude with God. Traveling alone provides a good opportunity for you to have a healthy dose of “me” time and also gives you a chance to break away from busyness and have ample time to pray and spend quiet time with God. Being away from my familiar surroundings on my own can make me feel nervous and cautious. In these moments, I turn to God and pray for His protection throughout my trip. This helps me to rely more on Him.
Want To Try Solo Travel But feel Too Afraid To Take The First Step?
When I used to think about solo traveling, I imagined someone sporty carrying a 10-kilo backpack, confidently walking through streets for 4-5 hours a day, from mountains to sea. I pictured solo travelers staying in budget hostels, sharing rooms with strangers, and eating bread and cheese to save money for more adventures. (I know, it sounds stereotypical.) While there's nothing wrong with that, and it can certainly be fun and worthwhile, it's not the only way to solo travel. You can always adjust and reinvent your itinerary to suit your preferred travel style.
1. Start Small
If the thought of spending a week alone in a foreign country feels daunting, why not start with a 3-day, 2-night staycation at that viral resort you've always dreamed of? Or consider a driving trip to a nearby suburb you've always wanted to explore but could never coordinate with others. (Be sure to check that your car is in good condition and fill up the petrol before the trip.) Starting small can help you discover your travel style and see if solo traveling is right for you.

2. Plan Ahead
If the thought of being alone and away from your familiar surroundings and friends sounds stressful, it's helpful to plan ahead. Create an itinerary, research the places you want to visit, decide on the activities you want to do, and determine the transportation you'll use to get around. You might also consider booking some guided day trips. This way, you'll feel more assured when you reach your destination.
3. Save And Budget
One of the best things about solo travel is that you get to decide your budget. Whether you want to splurge and enjoy luxury or be savvy and frugal, it's all up to you. Plan your itinerary, create a budget, and add an extra 20% to cover any surprises (a tip I learned from Ramit Sethi, author of "I Will Teach You to Be Rich"). With that, you're good to go.
4. Safety First

- Choose A Safe Country / Location
Safety is a primary concern when traveling solo, especially for females. It's wise to choose a country known for its safety for solo travelers. When booking accommodations, ensure they are secure. Do your research, and if you know any local friends, ask for their advice.
- Do Your Research
Every country has its own beliefs and culture. It's important to research the local customs, taboos, and behaviors to avoid, as well as understand what is considered appropriate and what might be offensive to others.
- Travel Insurance
While we take precautions to safeguard our safety and belongings while traveling, accidents or emergencies can still occur. It's wise to have travel insurance to protect yourself from potential financial risks and losses that may occur during the trip.
- Be Cautious When Interacting With Strangers
Solo travel offers opportunities to meet new people, but it's important to be cautious. If you make new friends, choose to meet in public places like restaurants where there are more people around. Order your own meal, keep an eye on your food and drink, and avoid accepting drinks from strangers. Stay vigilant and trust your instincts; if something feels uncomfortable, prioritize your safety and don't hesitate to walk away. Your well-being is most important.
5. Pack Light
Depending on your travel destination, if there's a lot of walking involved, it's advisable to pack lightly. Consider minimizing your skincare products, makeup, and accessories. From personal experience, I've packed everything before and hardly (if ever) used them.

6. Seek Advice from Experienced Solo Travelers
I recommend discussing your solo travel plans with someone who has experience in solo travel. Experienced travelers can provide valuable tips and insights on what to expect and how to stay safe while traveling alone. If you don't know anyone personally, consider connecting with solo travel influencers or digital nomads on social media. Many of them share their experiences and advice, which can be both informative and inspiring.
Now that you have an idea of why solo traveling is so amazing and how to start if you're feeling a little afraid, it's time to consider booking that flight ticket—well, whenever you're ready. Whether you prefer traveling with someone or going solo, I hope your upcoming journey is safe, memorable, and truly amazing.
